| Chef-owner Terrell Danley, formerly of Clyde’s, makes his own mark with Crème Café & Lounge. Drawing on his Southern roots, and presumably from family recipes as well, he presents various spirited concoctions such as Mama Laura’s chicken and some heavenly shrimp, sausage and creamy grits that inspire seconds. There’s a Nine Dollar Hot Dog made from Kobe beef, and a delightful meat and potatoes Americana, which consists of a braised, boned short rib perched on a bed of potatoes gratin. Don’t skip starters, even if a bowl of chicken noodle soup seems too mundane. It’s a streamlined version of the made-at-home variety, skimmed of fat and showcasing a delicate chicken broth. Our choice, however, is the Caesar salad, that overworked dish that here gets a fair shake: tender romaine is lightly dressed and accompanied by a “bowl” of Parmesan that holds the requisite anchovy paste. For dessert, if you don’t see it listed, ask about the coconut cake with its fluff of white frosting and shredded coconut. |
