Named after one of the popular spices used in Indian cuisine, Cumin is moving away from its Indian roots to take a more mainstream approach. It bills itself as "world fusion cuisine in a modern neighborhood." It still has unusual appetizers, such as spiced eggplant chips layered with rich date-tamarind sauce, and it screams trendy with its Indian tribal art mural and high-gloss, ebonized maple floors. And it's also loud, with live music every night from 7 p.m. until close. But don't expect authentic Indian to appear on the plate: think foie gras paired with pancakes. The lamb shank with saffron-garlic rice is a mainstay, but main courses also include crowd-pleasing chicken with artichoke or rib-eye with hand-cut rosemary fries. For dessert, we recommend the brown butter carrot cake served with cream cheese gelato or the grapefruit shortcake with strawberry purée and caramel whipped cream. Cumin is best known for its cozy Buddha lounge, which serves cocktails like the Bollywood --- Champagne and ginger-infused pomegranate juice --- or the coconut mojito with Indian aromatics. There's outdoor, bar and table seating, and the wine list has more than 100 choices.
