Cyprus Taverna Restaurant Review: This is among the best spots in Greektown, a one-block strip of restaurants all serving pretty much the same menu of moussaka, spinach pie, lamb chops and shish kebab. From the get-go, it’s apparent that the proprietors, Vassos and Eleni Avgoustis, and their sons, George and Chris, care about the quality of the fare. The family is from Cyprus and the menu includes, in addition to the Greek standards, a few dishes from that island, including haloumi cheese served warm as an appetizer, seftalies (spicy rolls of mixed pork, lamb and seasoning) and afelia (coriander-spiced pork braised with red wine). Specialties of lamb riganto and Greek salads are especially good here, heaped with beets, black olives, feta cheese and hot peppers. Better yet: You can get food into the wee hours most nights. |
