THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Daruma-Ya Restaurant Review:

The first American venture from Japan-based restaurant group Plan Do See, this izakaya offers a fun and authentic Japanese culinary experience. The chefs in the kitchen are pro noodle slinger Shuichi Kotani and erstwhile toque at Los Angeles’ Mori Sushi, Nobuhito Dosei. Start with the baseball-size pork and Washugyu beef croquettes and the foie gras aonori: nori wrapped around pieces of seared foie gras and bunches of rice. It’s some of the best “sushi” you will eat this week. Speaking of which, a small selection of sashimi is available but the izakaya menu is much more intriguing. Grilled lobster, for example, is coated with uni mayonnaise; fried scallop arrives in a crispy thin cracker, giving it a lovely textural crunch. The wine and saké selection is good; the Japanese whisky options are even better. Finish off the meal with chestnut-flavored mochi for a semi-sweet conclusion.
