Dining room at Davis Street Fishmarket, Evanston, IL

Seafood doesn't get much fresher than at this Evanston restaurant. Choose your catch from the refrigerated case, or sidle up to the raw bar. Whether you opt for Taiwanese barramundi or skate wing from Rhode Island, you can bet it will taste just-plucked. Chances are, it's eco-minded, too. In season, tackle the soft-shell crabs, which are done in a number of creative ways, and watch for theme nights (lobster Wednesdays, Cajun Sundays). And do get the Key lime pie for dessert; we highly recommend it.

I have been a fan of Davis Street Fishmarket for years but haven't visited in probably 18 months. What a wasted trip. My ahi tuna was probably the worst fish I've ever had. At first I thought it was a chicken cutlet it was so bland colored and thin. It appeared to have been pan fried in butter, was less than 1/8" thick and bland. There were no apparent seasonings. My husband had the halibut and it was the same: bland. His wasn't even warm! The service was lackluster at best. Do not go here if you are expecting fresh, flavorful fish.
