| Dawat means invitation to feast and for those in search of arguably the best Indian food in New York, this is the place to make your reservation. The elegant establishment, which has chef/cookbook author/TV personality Madhur Jaffrey as the creative force behind the menu, features many unique seasonally changing specialties. Begin with the flavorful Baghari Jhinga, a curried shrimp made with garlic and mustard or the spicy mulligatawny soup made with split peas, vegetables and chicken. Tandoor favorites include a whole fish marinated in yogurt and flavored with dill-like ajwain seeds before roasting, the home-style pieces of cardamom-infused baby goat and roasted chicken pieces folded into a creamy tomato sauce. Accompaniments---everything from terrific naan breads stuffed with everything from ground lamb to nuts and dried fruits to traditional yogurt and cucumber dips---are also impressive. |
