Housed in a space that was a longtime diner, this scenester eatery is easy on the eyes and tough on the arteries. The corner location boasts walls that open up to the sidewalk while electronic-Euro tunes thump unobtrusively in the background. The staff, who look straight from the set of a photo shoot for Benetton, are friendly and attentive. The menu here attempts to conceptualize classic New York cuisine into yet-unheard-of dishes: cheeseburger spring rolls are more intriguing on paper than on the plate; the Reuben fritters, five tennis-ball-size fritters stuffed with corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, are an inventive and fun snack (though eating all five alone is not recommended). For mains, the chicken in a bucket is better than it sounds: the crispy fried bird is tender on the inside but is nearly upstaged by the side of curry-tinged slaw that comes with it. The burger, served on a cutting board, is decent and the barbecue meatloaf, topped with jalapeƱo jack cheese, is hearty and generously portioned enough to function as your only meal of the day.
