Deschutes Brewery & Public House Restaurant Review: Deschutes is the big city outpost of a popular Bend brewery, which offers a wide selection of longstanding favorites and small batch experimental brews. Intricate, Western-style wood carvings bring a Central Oregon vibe to the airy, industrial space. The burgers (beef, elk and quinoa-cashew) are popular, as are the chimichurri fries, but the menu extends well beyond brewpub standards. Entrées include a smoked chicken and field greens salad, asparagus atop homemade fettuccine, and a hearty steak and bacon chowder. Some of the best choices feature home-brewed products, such as the root beer-braised pork belly and spent grain flatbread. Seafood fans will want to try fresh local oysters with three sauces, including the Black Butte Porter cocktail sauce incorporating one of Deschutes’ brews. For dessert, sample the cheeky monkey bread pudding made with vanilla coconut custard and chocolate chunk bread, and then topped with peanut butter ice cream. Deschutes also accommodates gluten-free diners, offering a special menu with smoked paprika fries, steamer clams, salads, and home-brewed gluten-free beer.
