| Is there anything better than comfort food and a classic diner? A place where fried chicken means deep-fried---not once but twice---and it's served with chive-whipped potatoes. Where macaroni and cheese ooze over pieces of spicy chorizo and a lobster roll overflows onto the plate. Where corn is served both on the cob and in the bread. Likewise, where else could you forget the carb-counting and dive into mouthwatering chocolate-banana breading pudding? Luckily for New York, the owners of Candela, Tao and Rue 57 also had the same cravings and the result is The Diner---a classic homage to the '30s and '40s in the trendy Meatpacking District. Burgundy leather banquettes, stainless steel accents and the black-and-white terrazzo floor harken to bygone days, but the lively music and bar scene transform ye olde soda fountain into a hip hotspot. Judging by the diverse crowd, classic comfort food may be this season for a long time to come. |
