: After years of running her own catering company, giving cooking classes in her Allen Street loft and dreaming up a restaurant concept, chef Cheryl Perry wondered on which direction she should focus. One look at this space in the Lower East Side, and she knew she could do it all. Dish is Perry’s combination restaurant, cooking school and rentable party space (you can combine the last two for a memorable get-together). But the most extraordinary thing about Dish is the price: $14.50 gets you a main course and two sides. Create your own plate by choosing from a long list of tarted-up American regional food: savory corn pudding, honey-jalapeƱo cornbread, three-cheese mac-and-cheese, brined and smoked chicken with roasted red grapes and lamb shank in a smoked tomato sauce. And the new brunch menu will make you forget about omelets and home fries: Choose from a long list that includes barbecued shrimp Benedict with a rosemary-cheddar biscuit, and tomato-and-pepper stew with two baked eggs and cheese grits. You might find it hard to swallow a $56 prix-fixe after a taste of this Dish. The restaurant’s budget-minded hip downtown crowd sure does.
