Tucked in the back of The Rum Runner, one of Tucson’s premier wine-gourmet food shops, The Dish is perhaps the city’s smallest dining venue, yet the plates that emerge from the kitchen are big on flavor and creativity. One could even make an entire meal from the "Small Dish" menu. The long-stemmed artichoke hearts are buttery rich, or perhaps the buttermilk-fried sweetbreads are more to your liking. The signature saffron mussels, with tomatoes and oregano, are terrific; all that's needed to seal the deal is a bottle of wine from the small but well-balanced list. (You can also buy wine from the store.) Follow these with one of the seasonal "Big Dishes." The braised veal cheeks ravioli is a winner, as is the pan-roasted chicken. The Dish does not take reservations, but The Rum Runner is a great place to do a little browsing while you wait for a table.
