Dixie’s, set in a big former automotive garage, is spanking clean and filled with racing posters, soda vending machines and rows of tables. Proprietor Gene Porter tends his smoker, taking breaks to walk around with "the Man," his name for the scorching, dried chili sauce he spoons from an old saucepan onto meaty chicken and ribs belonging to a few brave souls. Folks line up cafeteria-style for chopped pork (the house favorite), brisket sandwiches, ribs falling off the bone, red beans and rice, cornbread, potato salad and homemade lemon cake.
