| Doña Tota is a Mexican chain specializing in gorditas, or “little fatties,” and San Antonio is its first branch outside of the home country. The thick discs of griddled masa are filled here with an array of regionally-inspired ingredients---from Yucatecan chicken pibil to breakfast-friendly eggs with salsa verde. Prices range from $.99 for a chorizo and potato version to $1.99 for the fully-loaded Tota Supreme sporting beans, egg, cactus paddle, carnitas, chicharron and queso. A refreshing agua fresca (tamarind, perhaps) is the only reasonable response to such earthy opulence. Tiny sides of refried beans and guacamole seem monastic in comparison. The vinegary condiment of onion and habanero chilies, reeking of its roots in the Yucatan, will seem strange to some, but it adds welcome tang to fillings such as the pork in green sauce. |
