Dreamland Bar-B-Que Restaurant Review: Birmingham’s Dreamland is the city sister to Tuscaloosa’s unpretentious barbecue joint. John “Big Daddy” Bishop started his ribs restaurant in 1958, the same year Paul “Bear” Bryant began coaching at the University of Alabama, and both became legendary in their chosen fields. Ribs come in four-bone sandwiches, half-slab and full-slab portions. Spicy sausages will also make a hearty meal. Chopped pork and chicken are offered and can fill a sandwich or top a salad. French fries and macaroni ‘n’ cheese have joined potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw as sides. The beans have just a touch of brown sugar and honey, and the light sweetness is a nice counterpoint to the peppery-vinegary flavor of the ribs and sauce. Creamy homemade banana pudding makes a nice finish. Beers include a local Good People Brewing Company IPA. |
