This innovative quick bite earns our favor with a pleasant atmosphere, outdoor tables near a large, splashing fountain, and a most affordable, one-of-a-kind menu that incorporates influences from many cuisines. The well-traveled partners who opened East Of... call it an Austral-Mediterranean Café, thanks to the bits and pieces of Australian, Greek, Turkish, Spanish, Yemenese, Venezuelan, Mexican and New Zealand cooking that they have folded into their recipes. The menu concentrates on salads, rolled sandwiches and pizza-like lamajun, which consist of rounds of dough garnished with chopped vegetables and a choice of well-seasoned beef, chicken or eggplant. Beef, lamb and chicken roast slowly on revolving spits in the open kitchen, and are packed inside the rolled shawarma sandwiches along with a salad garnish and a choice of piquant sauces (we have a particular fondness for the Indonesian peanut sauce). For dessert, we always point to the homemade baklava in the display case, and secretly hope that the server will give us the largest square.
