To fully appreciate this restaurant you need to start with the name; it pays homage to a customer. Seems a man named Ed asked the founder to surprise him with a great wine. When the Merlot was served, Ed was very pleased and said, “From now on, always order the merlot.” In answer, the owner replied, “And from now on, you’re Eddie Merlot.” Large abstract stained glass artworks combine with fluted columns and sconces to create an elegant feel. Needless to say, Eddie Merlot’s is known for its steaks, which are Prime, aged for a minimum of 21 days and hand-cut by the chef. But the extensive menu offers much more, including seafood, duck, pork chops, lamb chops and sushi. The appetizers and platters alone are large enough for a meal. Our money’s on the platters; prepared for a minimum of two, you can opt for Atlantic (shrimp, oysters, mussels, sea scallops ceviche), Arctic (lobster, Alaskan king crab legs, shrimp) or Pacific (shrimp, oysters, mussels, seared sea scallops ceviche, Alaskan king crab legs). It’s hard to save room for dessert but the crème brûlée french toast and the s’mores will make you wish you had. Servers are attentive.
