With its theatrical setting and elegant vibe, El Gaucho is a Seattle favorite for romance as well as power business gatherings, special celebrations and an upscale happy hour. The restaurant is a throwback to an era when guests dressed up for dinner, arrived in limos, and drank expensive martinis. The darkly lit, tiered dining room rises like an amphitheater from the open kitchen, and waiters in black coats parade up and down the steps bearing retro classics such as flaming lamb shish kebab and Châteaubriand for two. Some dishes are prepared tableside, such as the zesty Caesar salad or spicy tuna tartare. Although we are partial to the dry-aged porterhouse and the New York peppercorn steak, fish is handled here with equal finesse. Three seafood choices are offered nightly, along with a respectable Northwest bouillabaisse and an 18-ounce Australian lobster tail, which can be paired with a small filet for a surf ‘n’ turf combo. To finish with a blast from the past, choose bananas Foster for dessert. The wine list is extensive and pricey.
