| Chicago-born restaurateur Arturo Cabral wanted to teach Kansas Citians that Mexican food was more than just tacos, burritos and enchiladas. So he put his mother, Estela, to work. The resulting menu is full of seafood-based treats, parrilladas and soulfully good pork dishes. Among the best seafood dishes are the coctel vuelve a la vida, a jumbo-size, tomato-based seafood cocktail comprised of raw oysters, shrimp and octopus. And the fish tacos are among the best you’ll find: Cabral tucks sautéed tilapia into sturdy corn tortillas and serves them with refreshing mango salsa. Two or more can share the fajitas-like parrilladas, served in foot-tall chafing dishes shaped like the turret of a castle. Other must-try dishes: the carnitas tacos and the guisado de puerco, stew seasoned with guajillo and ancho chilies. The restaurant also serves standout margaritas; the bar is stocked with about 40 tequilas, from El Patron Blanco to Gran Patron Platinum, a pricey, cold-weather sipper. Put these on the short list, though: the El Patron margarita and the El Jimador margarita. Once you've dined, step out and try the salsa lessons Wednesday through Saturday evenings. |
