Ella’s in Penn Quarter takes the pizza game up a notch with such pies as the Lombardi with caramelized onions and Gorgonzola; the wild mushroom with goat cheese; and the traditional pepperoni with fresh mozzarella. If possible, grab a seat by the open kitchen with its wood-burning pizza oven for a peek at the staff at work. Despite the restaurant’s name, other fare is offered as well, such as a steak salad and saffron and seafood risotto. Some of the unusual small plates work as appetizers. Any meal benefits from an introduction of baby kale salad with apples, dried cranberries and crumbled goat cheese. A limited collection of house-made desserts includes a double chocolate pudding and an Italian-style cheesecake.
