Empellon Taqueria Restaurant Review

: Alex Stupak created a minor sensation when he announced he was leaving his position as pastry chef at the acclaimed, avant-garde wd-50 to open a---wait for it---taqueria in the West Village. And so he did, in the space long held by Chow Bar. There’s nothing tricky or “molecular” about the food at Empellon. The tacos are good, not great, and come in pairs of three (all of which are overpriced, but blame that on the high West Village rent, perhaps). The sope, piled high with short rib, tasted like it had been under a heat lamp for the better part of the evening, but the fish tempura tacos were done just right: light and flaky and accompanied by a crispy cabbage slaw (there are also lamb, chicken, cactus and tongue tacos). The almond and pumpkin salsas that come with each order might be the brightest spot at this very loud restaurant. The wine list is extensive and there are several Mexican beers on tap.
