Dining room at THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Empress of China, San Francisco, CA

THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Empress of China Restaurant Review

: Locals typically prefer neighborhood Chinese restaurants to this aging dowager, but that doesn't mean that the Empress is not busy, especially with banquets. Other places might be a dollar or two cheaper, but you can't beat the allure of this upper-floor eatery high above bustling Chinatown and its dome-roofed Empress Garden Court. The menu concentrates on fresh Cantonese cuisine, meaning an emphasis on seafood. Expect efficient service from jacketed waiters. Photos of past celebrities and dignitaries who have dined here grace the walls in the elevator lobby.

Give it a miss (and vegetarians beware)

I arrived late night to an EMPTY restaurant, but they wouldn't give a window seat to a solo diner. Which was silly, as the view is the only decent thing about this place.

My tofu and spinach soup was barely edible.

I ordered vegetarian moo shui, no mushrooms. It arrived with mushrooms, and I decided to cope. The waiter made a big, if sullen, show of stuffing the pancakes for me. Bad mistake -- it meant I couldn't see the food. Halfway through the second oily, flavorless pancake, I found myself gagging on a shrimp.

It took forever to get anyone's attention and then they wanted to make a fresh dish -- no thank you! They were also sulky about taking the main dish off the meal and still charged for the overpriced, barely edible soup.

There are plenty of nice views in San Francisco. Give this a miss.
