Part of Seattle chef-restaurateur Tom Douglas' culinary empire, Etta's truly captures Northwest cuisine. Located a block north of Pike Place Market with striking views of Elliott Bay across the street, Etta's is a place to take out-of-towners. Like Douglas's other signature restaurants---Dahlia Lounge, Lola, Palace Kitchen and Serious Pie---it's sophisticated yet unpretentious. Brightly hued tiled mirrors line the walls, iron sculptures shaped like fish bones serve as coat hooks, and whimsical light fixtures curved like octopus tentacles illuminate the dining room. Douglas’ eclectic culinary vision borrows from points East and West to create a seafood-centric menu heavily accented with comfort food. Start any meal with seasonal oysters or Tom’s tasty sashimi salad served with scallion pancakes and wasabi. If Seattle had the equivalent of a national dish, Etta’s spice-rubbed, pit-roasted Alaskan king salmon matched with shiitake mushrooms and custardy cornbread pudding would earn the title. Dungeness crab and lobster (available half or whole) come simply steamed, or wok-seared and bursting with fresh chilies, fermented black beans and garlic. As at all of Douglas’ restaurants, desserts are substantial and seductive; if nothing else, save room for the legendary triple coconut cream pie.
