| When this Greek restaurant opened in the mid '90s, it was distinctive, because if there was one missing cuisine in the Bay Area, it was Greek. Since then, the owners opened Kokkari, a more luxurious location in San Francisco. You could say Evvia was practice for that more ambitious project. It's casual yet pretty, with an open kitchen and multicolored bottles decorating the back wall. As soon as you enter, you can smell the wood-fired oven where the lamb, chicken and fish are roasted. The appetizer plate is lovely, especially the selection of spreads: roasted eggplant, yogurt-cucumber, cod roe purée, all served with stuffed grape leaves and crispy pita bread for dipping. The grilled items such as tuna or striped bass are nicely done, and the salads---classic Greek, tossed greens or, better yet, the grilled octopus with olives and peppers---go well with the entrées. Finish your meal with one of the honey-bathed phyllo desserts or a nice brandy. |
