Family Recipe Restaurant Review:

Hand-crafted, delicately presented Japanese cuisine is the specialty of Tokyo-born chef Akiko Thurnauer. After cutting her teeth at Nobu and later creating lovely hand-delivered bento-box meals, chef Thurnauer has claimed her own space at this tiny restaurant on the Lower East Side. The menu focuses on small plates, designed for sharing and experiencing Japanese home cooking as you might enjoy in an izakaya or at a family dinner. Interesting sakés are offered in flights to complement light dishes like kale salad with pomegranate and candied pistachios, as well as heartier pork belly buns. Okonomiyaki, a pancake-like dish, arrives with bonito flakes that appear to dance from their perch atop rock shrimp. While some of the dishes could use a bit of spicing up, they nevertheless reflect the care of the team of chefs and servers.
