2004 James Beard Foundation Award Winners

Winners were announced for the 2004 James Beard Foundation Awards, the nation’s top honors for culinary professionals, at a gala held at the New York Marriott Marquis on May 10.

New York City's Chanterelle was named S. Pellegrino Outstanding Restaurant. Judy Rodgers, chef and co-owner of San Francisco's Zuni Café, was named All-Clad Cookware Outstanding Chef. Bradley Ogden in Las Vegas took home the Illy Best New Restaurant Award.

Allison Vines-Rushing, of Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar in New York City, was named Gallo of Sonoma Rising Star Chef of the Year. Emily Luchetti, pastry chef of Farallon in San Francisco, was named All-Clad Bakeware Outstanding Pastry Chef. Eleven Madison Park in New York City received the Smithfield Foods Outstanding Service Award. New York's Babbo received the Gallo of Sonoma Outstanding Wine Service Award. Karen MacNeil, wine writer and instructor at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena, CA, was named Ecolab Outstanding Wine & Spirits Professional.

The American Express Best Chefs in America, awarded to recipients in eight regions, went to: David Pasternack, Esca (New York), Charles Phan, The Slanted Door, San Francisco (California), Paul Kahan, Blackbird, Chicago (Midwest), Ann Cashion, Cashion's Eat Place, Washington, DC (Mid-Atlantic), Sam Hayward, Fore Street, Portland, ME (Northeast), Louis Osteen, Louis's at Pawley's Island, SC (Southeast), Luciano Pellegrini, Valentino at The Venetian, Las Vegas (Southwest) and Eric Tanaka, Dahlia Lounge, Seattle (Pacific Northwest/Hawaii).

Berkeley, California Chef and Restaurateur Alice Waters received The James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Foundation presented awards in 11 categories for food and beverage books published in 2003 in the U.S. and Canada. KitchenAid Cookbook of the Year went to The King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion (The Countryman Press).

The James Beard Foundation Awards recipients are selected by more than 600 food and beverage industry professionals who vote by confidential ballot in one or more award categories depending on their expertise.
