Federal Donuts Restaurant Review: Michael Solomonov (Zahav) and his team know better than to mess with the foolproof formula of fried chicken and donuts that made an instant success of the first Federal Donuts in South Philly. This more prominent Center City spot hews to the same daily routine by turning out fresh donuts in the morning and fried chicken starting at midday. However, the donut flavors and chicken varieties are different, making a necessity of trying both locations. Center City's "Hot Fresh" donuts include a chocolate-mint and cinnamon brown sugar, while "Fancy" varieties feature such tantalizing combos as maple-bacon, milk chocolate-peanut butter, and cherry-almond. The Korean-style twice-fried chicken comes in three rubs (Federal BBQ, Shabazzi and Buttermilk Ranch) and two glazes (chili-garlic and honey-ginger). Although quantities are still limited, the likelihood of procuring the goods is better now that there are two sites. As with the original, wash everything down with a strong cup of PT's Coffee.
