: Upper East Side's ultrachic French bistro, always packed with a stylish crowd, boasts authentic cuisine and a see-and-be-seen atmosphere. Service is straightforward, not florid, and the tables crowded together seem intimate, not intimidating. Begin with starters prepared with élan: roasted crab meat served with red cabbage and lemon vinaigrette, and the famous ten-great-ways-to-make-mussels menu with mussels prepared every way imaginable from provençal- to Thai-style. Popular main courses include grilled tuna Provençal and the pan-broiled sirloin steak in a green peppercorn sauce. Desserts are what you might expect: tarte Tatin, crème brûlée and an excellent banana cream pie. Theatergoers probably will be pleased with the special pre-theater prix-fixe menu at $20 that includes an appetizer, main course and dessert. At lunchtime, Park Avenue executives vie for tables with Madison Avenue shoppers, and in summer, the outdoor tables are much in demand.
