Being seen in the right place in the Meatpacking District can be just as important as, say, feeding yourself. Which means that restaurants boasting an über-hip scene could, in theory, get away with serving sub-par cuisine. Fig & Olive, dishing up Mediterranean fare in an airy space that’s decked out with plenty of cool backlighting, manages to attract the hiperati while producing quality goods in the kitchen at the same time. There’s a lot on the long menu that tempts. Entrées include a not-so-memorable Mediterranean tasting plate (of grilled chicken, lamb and shrimp) and a generous portion of lobster pasta de Venezia (that may be dry and bland). All the more reason to stick to the large selection of small plates and starters: the juicy seared sea scallops (topped with shaved artichoke) and the crispy-on-the-outside, gooey-on-the-inside crab croquettes a la plancha are standouts. And the Fig & Olive salad, loaded with fresh veggies, apple, manchego, Gorgonzola and walnuts, is a refreshing way to finish off the meal before vanishing into the Meatpacking night. |
