A welcome addition to the Upper West Side dining scene is Michael Psilakis' FishTag, located in the space previously occupied by his gastropub Gus & Gabriel and an earlier incarnation of his Greek establishment Kefi. The narrow space features a bar as you enter, with the dining area towards the back. Psilakis designed the seafood-heavy menu. Instead of the usual divisions of “appetizers” and “entrées,” the items are organized with lighter fare on top, heavier and bolder towards the bottom, with suggested beverage pairings conveniently listed alongside. Most dishes are served in small portions at reasonable prices, so consider starting by splurging on the smoked salmon vertical ($40 for samples of all six) or the full charcuterie board ($75). Diners might encounter interesting ingredient combinations such as scallop crudo with pickled beets and pistachio tartare, bone marrow and peppercress; and grilled sardines with fennel confit, saffron pickled fennel, radish and dried capers. Other options might range from bouchot mussels with spicy lamb to grilled branzino stuffed with head cheese. Conclude your meal with coffee or tea service, or homemade ice cream and sorbet in flavors like chestnut honey and Black Mission fig. The eclectic, carefully selected wine list offers three-ounce and six-ounce pours, in addition to half and full bottles. The selection of craft beers, cocktails, whiskies and other liquors is also worth browsing through. Service is friendly.
