Five Brothers Grocery & Sandwich Shop Restaurant Review: It is the son of one of the five namesake (and logo-depicted) brothers who runs this store now, but the essence as a family corner store and coffee shop couldn’t be truer. Heriberto Paez Jr. makes coffees all day long, six days a week, while his wife and other relatives work the small, back kitchen churning out Cuban sandwiches (egg and cheese, mixed meat, roast pork, palomilla steak, fried grouper) and daily specials like picadillo, ropa vieja and beef stew. While waiting, peruse the shelves of the small grocery store, stocked with creative Key West souvenirs like canned guava paste, chorizo sausage, dominos, and violet cologne. Or, eavesdrop on the cross-section of Key West society who frequents this place (dental hygienists, police officers, roofers, retired millionaires) as they discuss the day’s events and scandals. A true local nexus, this place is not to be missed. |
