The bakery is in the back of this quirky downtown Ventura restaurant. There you’ll find a small patio for sipping coffee and nibbling freshly made bread, such as the apricot-almond round or the cranberry-hazelnut loaf, both of which pop up around sandwiches like the Reuben and the turkey and Brie. Small slices of bread also come alongside salads, including the roasted asparagus and even the Caesar. You’ll find pastries listed on the breakfast menu, after the Southwestern breakfast burrito and the biscuits with gravy. The dinner menu is basically an extension of the lunch offerings, with occasional specials thrown into the mix. The result is somewhat confusing, considering there’s a full bar serving a bevy of cocktails and a grand piano in the dining room. That plus the flat-screen TV’s and black-lights in the bathrooms lend a very clubby atmosphere. It’s odd to say the least. Drop in during the day for a nice lunch or brunch and try to resist asking about the name, which came from the original Phoenix café located in an historic florist shop.
