| The South’s ubiquitous small-town fish fry shacks inspire Flying Fish, serving crispy, deep-fried catfish with a healthy dose of kitsch. The walls are festooned with novelty Billy Bass singing fish trophies (donate yours and get a free catfish dinner) and snapshots of customers displaying their best catches. At the front counter, order classic fried catfish and hushpuppies or step it up a notch with grilled tilapia or snapper Veracruz style. Sides include pickled green tomatoes, beer-battered onion rings, and grilled squash. Wine and beer are sold in price categories of “good” or “better” so don’t expect the finest vino. Desserts are basic Southern fare: Key lime pie, bread pudding, banana pudding or cobbler. Stop in on Wednesday for the all-you-can-eat catfish special. |
