| Chef-owner Christine Keff, one of Seattle’s most down-to-earth chefs, opened Flying Fish in 1995 in Belltown. Her new space has the same energy (and high decibel level) as the original restaurant, but with a modern vibe upscale enough for a business dinner or for friends sharing a steaming bowl of lemon grass and chili mussels. Keff’s cuisine is consistent and beautifully prepared, interesting without being flashy. The menu features small plates, large plates and platters, all ideal for sharing. Favorites have included salt and pepper crab with sesame noodles, ahi poke garnished with sweet potato strings, and black cod and udon noodles in a fragrant miso broth. Non-fish fanciers will go for the buttermilk fried chicken and curried Indian lamb riblets. Affordable $5 cocottes (sides), such as baked mashed potatoes, salmon and leek potpie or chanterelle and arugula flan, can create an enticing light meal. Desserts by pastry chef Jessica Campbell might include a tiny skillet of peach cobbler, salted caramel pot de crème, and huckleberry cheesecake. Servers are well-trained and pleasant. The large outdoor patio is popular on warm summer days. |
