The Forge In the Forest Restaurant Review: The Forge is a Carmel landmark --- it has been a locals' hangout since the late 1970's. The kitchen turns out reasonably priced and predictable comfort food, like bison ribs that have been braised for hours, and mussels stuffed with parsley and just enough garlic in a white wine and lemon-scented broth. We found the French onion soup a little clunky, with too much cheese and bread smothering the well-caramelized onions in a nicely flavored vegetarian broth. We enjoyed the apple tarte Tatin à la mode, as well as the pillowy chocolate brownie cake. A “napoleon” of puff pastry, whipped cream and strawberries lacked a “wow” element, like orange liqueur in the cream or a contrasting sauce. Nevertheless, outdoor tables and a casual vibe make this a good place to people-watch and pass an afternoon or evening.
