 The Fouquet's landmark status in Paris has landed it on the "Monuments Historiques" list (Historical Monuments). Its story starts in 1899 when Louis Fouquet purchased a small eatery for coach drivers on the corner of the prestigious Champs-Elysées and avenue George V. Soon it became the place to be and it has remained so through the years and the different proprietors; a highlight is the after-parties for the César and the Molières. Now in the hands of the French luxury hotel group Lucien Barrière, the restaurant, famous for its red canopy, has been rejuvenated by French decorator José Garcia and chef Jean-Yves Leuranguer. Leuranguer has successfully infused modernity into the menu’s classic repertoire. Foie gras lovers will like the version he serves with kumquat marmalade, while fish aficionados should choose lobster raviolis, sardines ceviche or smoked salmon hand-cut and served with delicious blinis for appetizers. Regulars like to continue with turbot on a bed of leeks, the Saint-Pierre with celery purée, spicy roasted lamb or duck filet with rhubarb compote, asparagus and mushrooms. A healthy option may be selected from the "Menu Forme," but if Italian cuisine in on your map, choose from the selection of risottos, spaghetti and grilled vegetables. Pastry chef Jean-Luc Labat has composed quite a long list of desserts, from baba au rhum, the Grand Marnier biscuit with orange mousse and a raspberries millefeuille to the pastries of the day served from a cart. Expect professional service and a wine list composed exclusively of French wines.
