| At the hillcrest up and away from Sebastopol’s earthy main drag stands the genteel French Garden Restaurant. Formal white pillars at its entryway give way to an expansive but welcoming dining room split so that patrons may opt for elegant, traditional French cuisine on one side or bistro bar “tapas” on the other. Though notorious turnaround in the kitchen has caused loyalists whiplash, chef Patrick Quillec from Brittany has thankfully taken firm root. He makes noble use of ingredients straight from the restaurant’s 30-acre certified organic farm a couple of miles up the road, sources meats and fish locally when possible, and even holds a bounteous weekly farmers market on premise in the parking lot. Starters may include foie gras with star anise gastrique, mussels in Pernod cream, or a simple salad of chickweed, miner’s lettuce and wild mustard with oranges and blue cheese. Featured entrées may be trout amandine with fingerlings, rabbit stew, or potato-wrapped halibut with leek fondue. In the bar, popular on weekend eves for French-themed live music, sample plates of salt potatoes, hanger steak sliders with onion confit and horseradish aïoli, and local and overseas cheeses. Consider the extensive à la carte brunch with Bellinis a delightful Sunday wake-me-up. |
