Giancarlo’s Ristorante Mediterraneo Restaurant Review

: It’s off the well-beaten path of the Embarcadero, but it’s worth finding your way to Giancarlo’s for some authentic Italian fare. Signature dishes often involve the restaurant’s wood-fired oven, which the chefs use for everything from crispy flatbreads to caramelized beets to rack of lamb. Other favorites are almost anything seafood, such as pre-shelled cioppino or pasta with salmon and scallops sautéed in a cream sauce and topped with Dungeness. For dessert, enjoy homemade tiramisu or panna cotta. The ample wine list leans more towards Italian labels than locals, and there’s also a full bar. Nightly specials include the Wednesday three-course “Roman-style” shared dinners and the Thursday martini and oyster nights. Seating options range from the lively bar fronting the demonstration kitchen to the adjacent white-tablecloth dining room.

The food is pretty good. The house wines are terrible...and the service is worse than the house wines.

Giancarlo's is an outstanding restaurant which I experienced for the first time with my boyfriend on 11/9/11 and to which we will definitely return. From the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome as if we were family by all the staff. Two ladies named Maria could not have been more gracious as they instantly started serving us bread within seconds of being seated. Our beautiful server named Cami could not have been kinder or more professional. The entire dinner from the wines to the mussels appetizer to the breads dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar to the pork chop dinner to the crab cioppino to the lemoncello gelato dessert with coffee could not have tasted any better than it did. We were so very impressed and think this restaurant must be one of the best kept secrets of the Central Coast of California. Before leaving we individually thanked all of our three servers and the owner, Giancarlo, who was serving guests from behind the bar. Once we met him with his exuberant personality, we understood why all the staff was so fantastic; he sets the tone. We told him that we felt as if we had come into a big family home because the whole atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. I also told him that I had just returned for 6 days in Venice Italy and that I like his food better than anything I had tried while on vacation.
