Portraits of the great Irish writers line the walls of this convivial spot. Look for Keats, Wilde, Yeats, Joyce and the other big boys of Irish lit (sadly, there's not a lass to be found) as you sip a pint of Guinness at the friendly bar. High ceilings, brass accents, and exposed brick walls give The Gingerman a snazzy look, and you'll find anyone from students to old guys doing the New York Times crossword puzzle enjoying the vibe here. Food ranges from solid bistro fare (cheese and fruit platter, quiche, monstrous salads) to full-on entrées (good seafood, pasta, and meat dishes). The spotlight, however, always falls on the wine list, which is one of the best in the area. Pick from 60 different wines by the glass; by the bottle, the restaurant offers almost twice as many choices. In warmer weather, snag a bottle of wine and a sidewalk table and watch the world go by. Some of the best values in town are The Gingerman’s five-course wine and beer dinners priced as low as $45 per person.
