Girasol Restaurant Review

: Girasol means sunflower in Spanish, and this modern, rustic restaurant in Studio City is indeed a bright blossom that towers above many of the other neighborhood eateries. "Top Chef" alum CJ Jacobson himself is like a tall sunflower bending over tables as he stops to say an affable hello (he’s 6’8”). Having once staged at Copenhagen's famed Noma, it’s no surprise that his refined Californian menu is seasonal, but that’s an easy trend --- here Jacobson really means it and the proof is in unique foraged ingredients like Santa Monica mountain wild elderberries (a fine foil for steak) and nuanced sauces marrying kumquat and sorrel. One can share a number of interesting and well-crafted small plates --- we suggest the octopus salad nestled with long-roasted eggplant and finished with rosemary ash oil and toasted lovage. For mains, we enjoy the tender braised leg of lamb offset by crispy kale and plum, though we did find the sauce over-salted. A real showstopper is the signature dish of whole fried red snapper, which arrives propped up like it was flash-cooked mid-swim; unfortunately, we again found a heavy use of salt when it came to the bed of arugula beneath it. Desserts are also inventive and intriguing, like an olive oil cake with crème fraîche, local peaches, crystallized fennel and rosemary. Weekend brunch brings dishes such as bread pudding french toast and lobster eggs Benedict.
