| The East Village is a hothouse of kinda-hip, low-budget Italian joints. One that blooms more seductively than the others is Gnocco. Emilia-Romagnan owners Pierluigi Palazzo and Rossella Tedesco run a cozy operation; bypass the small front dining room for the roomy, canopied rear garden. Meals must start with the house namesake, gnocco, which are like fried wontons served with salami and prosciutto. Oven-baked artichoke hearts stuffed with goat cheese is another starter, then move on to the better-than-average northern Italian-style pizzas. The more hearty dishes are also worth a try: oven-roasted rack of lamb accented with artichokes and an herb-marinated Cornish hen are satisfying. The all-Italian wine list has several nice choices, including some affordable picks by the glass. Expect two things: a wait on weekends and the sound of the Italian language---Gnocco is a magnet for hungry, homesick ex-pats. |
