About the restaurant and décor: This Costa Mesa eatery is the picture-postcard definition of a family-run Chinese restaurant. The outdated pastel décor and floral wallpaper create the kind of oddly charming, warm effect that makes guests feel right at home, particularly if they’re kicking off the meal with a mai tai or another brightly hued cocktail.
Likes: Plenty of vegetarian options.
Dislikes: Décor could use a refresh.
Food & Drinks: We recommend going family style and ordering a few of the unpretentious and rather good dishes, from starters like the minced beef and ginger wonton to larger plates such as the sautéed white fish with bean sauce, sautéed pork with black mushroom and bamboo, or the guilty pleasure fried chicken wing selection dubbed Chinese Kentucky Delight. Peking duck is also available, as long as you call the place 24 hours ahead of time to make your intentions known. Can’t decide? Order up one of the prix-fixe multi-person dinners. Whatever route you go, be sure to save room for desserts like green tea ice cream.
