| This Old San Francisco, Barbary Coast-style restaurant has served hearty platters to diners since 1958. Oysters and steamed clams are offered in season; jumbo shrimp and Alaskan king crab cocktails are always available. Favorites include an individual tureen of French onion soup au gratin, a beefsteak tomato with vinaigrette and garnishes, and a 16-ounce short horn New York steak. Elegant touches include Caesar salad prepared tableside and Dover sole boned tableside. We like the Italian specialties such as veal Marsala and chicken Sicilian sautéed with mushrooms and sherry, served with toasted ravioli or spaghetti with meat sauce. Soup or mixed greens precede combo platters of petite filet with lobster or crab legs. Rack of lamb and Châteaubriand bouquetière are prepared for two. The extra-thick 18-ounce Diamond Lil and 24-ounce Diamond Jim cuts of prime rib cover the plate. Among sweet finales are cherries jubilee and bananas Foster prepared tableside, and a creative cappuccino of espresso, chocolate and six liqueurs and liquors topped with whipped cream. A piano player entertains weekend evenings in the comfortable bar-lounge. |
