Golden Temple Cafe Restaurant Review: Large pots simmer for hours preparing the black bean, mushroom barley and vegetarian gumbo soups that often sell out at this brightly lit store with a café on the side. Yellow walls and prayer flags add a cheery note. Since 1973, Golden Temple has specialized in vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free cooking. Served with blue corn chips, chunky guacamole is a satisfying nosh. Veggie burgers, hot dogs, tofu salad or grilled cheese are sandwich offerings. A Mexican pizza comes laden with black beans, assorted vegetables, salsa and cheese on a tortilla. Golden Temple stack remains the most popular dish, layering rice, beans, cheese, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. A cream cheese, date and walnut sandwich is a crowd-pleaser, as is the Golden Temple sandwich, composed of guacamole or hummus with mushrooms or black olives, tomatoes and melted Swiss cheese. Although breakfast is no longer served, an organic juice bar lets you build your own smoothie, sells organic coffee and sometimes vegan and gluten-free muffins in the mornings.
