Key West has plenty of restaurants offering the souvenir scenery and checklist of local specialties. But it has fewer that take you in as if you lived there and feed you the kind of food you’d get at your best friend’s house. The Good Life is that kind of place, from the vintage velvet armchairs and 1970s pendant lamps to the budget-friendly, interesting wine list to the menu of appealing sounding dishes that (often) have a coastal flair. Open the meal with shrimp and sweet potato cakes with avocado corn salsa, or crispy wontons stuffed with mahi mahi. The coconut green curry entrée (with chicken, tofu or shrimp) is a standout, as are the seared scallops dabbed with goat cheese. Yes, the German chocolate cake will beckon, but it’s more local to have the banana bread french toast with ice cream and maple syrup. Unless you can possibly do both.
