Portland's culinary scene is fueled by inventive youngsters who really strive to change the restaurant industry. Gotham Bldg Tavern is owned by Ripe, the same people who invented clarklewis and Family Supper. At GBT, their goal is to reinvent the pub scene into a more modern (and gastronomically enlightened) arena. Think basic Northwest comfort food with a twist: venison with creamed chard and local roasted mushrooms or trout with squash fritters and urchin roe sabayon. Or think regular food with funny names such as a brunch dish called The Thing That Chris Ate---scrambled eggs, buttered toast and salad. The ultramodern interior is softened with some woodsy accents, and when the place is packed---as it often is---it's loud. But just dive in to the eclectic drink menu and the noise will melt away.
