If you haven’t heard of Mike Isabella, you’ve never watched Top Chef or even eaten at Zaytinya, where for several years Isabella ruled the kitchen. As energetic in real life as he appeared on TV, Isabella has his own eatery, based on home-style Italian foods, the kinds he grew up with. That means fire-baked pizzas, assorted salads, and, of course, pasta. Noted for his special hand-cut spaghetti, Isabella has upped the culinary ante by offering it with a topping of poached cherry tomatoes. The food is definitely low-glam, but according to Isabella, he wants a place where people can slip in day or night to dine in comfort and to dine without a staggering price tag. The décor reflects this workingman’s mindset: exposed pipes and concrete. An open kitchen, upstairs seating if the bar area gets crowded, and a busy crew add up to a restaurant that has gained traction. But what else would you expect from a Top Chef contestant?
