Green Village Shanghai is one of the San Gabriel Valley’s most formal Chinese restaurants, but it's still a bargain for family-style Shanghai fare. Shanghai flavors tend to be on the sweet side, with mild seasonings and lots of savory stews like chicken with chestnuts. Fried eels are no stranger than the ubiquitous orange chicken, and the unusually-named croaker with liver moss is a tasty Chinese take on fried fish with river moss mixed into the crispy batter. Braised pork knuckle, known in some restaurants as the famous “pork pump,” is richly decadent. Seafood dishes, including hairy crab and several preparations of eel, are also a specialty. Wuxi spareribs, fragrant with anise, are a good example of Shanghai cooking, and the pork in a bamboo pipe has an impressive presentation. Several private rooms and a full bar make Green Village a good place for celebrations.
