THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Greg Couillard’s Spice Room & Chutney Bar Restaurant Review:

The cozy, dark room on the lower level of a chic shopping mall is almost hidden beneath the escalator. Step in and you’re greeted with a rich color scheme of dark brown woods with copper accents. Low lights and a water feature recollect a tropical jungle. In the kitchen, chef Greg Couillard is masterful with his spicing and fresh chutneys---but that’s where it ends. Unctuous, sticky belly ribs covered in black bean chili sauce with an assortment of ultra fresh chutneys shows the chef at his best. The Zanzibar-rubbed Berbere rack of lamb may arrive overcooked, the meat completely overshadowed by the spicing. A too-generous portion of grilled vegetables swims in a vinegary ginger yakitori sauce. House-made coconut buns and desserts like cardamom spice cake are rather ho hum. The wine list, despite over 200 labels, is still a work in progress.
