The Lodge at Torrey Pines is known for its gorgeous architecture and sumptuous meals at A.R. Valentien. What most people might not know is that it boasts a little spot called The Grill. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, it’s perfect for an after-golf or post-swim meal for guests, but also ideal for locals looking for dependable food with no pretense. Our favorite? The drugstore-style hamburger recalls days past with a combination of beef, tart pickle, creamy mayo and toasted bun. The menu also offers standards like shrimp cocktail, fried calamari and Dungeness crab cakes. We like the blackberry vinaigrette that tops the spinach salad, as well as the flavorful flatiron steak and garlicky shrimp fettuccine. Grilled mahi tacos are a must, with cabbage, avocado, sour cream, black beans and queso fresco. You also can't go wrong with a root beer float for dessert.
