THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Grotto Restaurant Review:
From Arnie's to Palette's to an Italian steakhouse, Grotto, this space, which is locked into a high-rise (Newberry Plaza), faces a fight for customers, considering the heavy competition nearby. In reality, this space (through Art Deco and beyond) has always been pleasant. Overall, the cooking is good: grilled calamari in balsamic vinaigrette, rigatoni with vodka sauce, bone-in filet mignon and veal piccata are recommendable. There are lots of Italian small plates for noshing, too; go for steamed mussels with cannellini beans in white wine-garlic sauce, carpaccio with horseradish-mustard dressing or grilled veggies with balsamic sauce. The bar and adjoining area are quite nice. Tables are covered in cloth (no paper) and have candles; there are hardwood floors and comfortable booths along the north wall. The wine list is brief.
